Who is eligible for a free COVID-19 test?
1) You ARE eligible for free diagnostic test: If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms AND fall into one or more of the following groups of people:
- Patient-facing healthcare workers.
- Staff, volunteers, residents/inpatients, essential care providers and visitors in highest risk settings.
- Household members of anyone working in highest risk settings1 and patient-facing health care workers.
- Someone who has been exposed, or a close contact of someone exposed, to a confirmed or suspected outbreak in a highest risk setting.1
- Temporary Foreign Workers in congregate living settings.
- Outpatients for whom COVID-19 treatment is being considered, including:
- Immunocompromised individuals.
- Individuals who are not fully vaccinated and are at highest risk of severe disease (includes anyone 70 years and older, or 60 years and older who is Indigenous, and/or has additional risk factors2).
- Pregnant people.
- People who are underhoused or homeless.
- First responders including fire, police and paramedics.
- Elementary and secondary students and education staff who have received a PCR self-collection kit through their school.
2) You ARE eligible for free diagnostic test: If you are one of the following (whether you have COVID-19 symptoms or not):
- If you are having a scheduled (non-urgent/emergent) surgery that requires general anaesthetic.
- If you are receiving specific treatments (i.e. hematopoietic cell therapy, cancer treatment, hemodialysis), and testing is required.
- Individuals who are from a First Nation, Inuit, Métis community, and/or who self-identify as First Nation, Inuit, and Métis and their household members.
- Individuals, and one accompanying caregiver, with written prior approval from the General Manager, OHIP, for out-of-country medical services.
3) COVID-19 symptoms include:
- Fever and/or chills; OR
- Cough; OR
- Shortness of breath; OR
- Decrease or loss of smell or taste; OR
- Two or more of:
- Runny nose/nasal congestion
- Headache
- Extreme fatigue
- Sore throat
- Muscle aches/joint pain
- Gastrointestinal symptoms (i.e., vomiting or diarrhea) Symptoms should not be related to other known causes or conditions.
